Sound-Literacy.

Hey Bloggers! This week in literacy I have been reading about sound and had to write a short report on it. so here it is! :)

Sound

Today we will be looking about how sound works, I have four questions about sound, which are going to help us understand. I will be answering these four questions; What is sound? How does sound travel? Does sound work in space? Why does sound at different speeds through different materials?

What is sound? Sound is the energy things produce when they vibrate, for example, if you were to clap. Your hands would vibrate at very high speed (usually so fast, you can’t see them vibrating) The vibrations are very strong, causing the air to vibrate, so the vibrations go all through the air, eventually causing the air in your ears to vibrate, and that’s when you can hear the sound of the clap.

How does sound travel? In someway, the sound is a lot like light, Sound travels from some source, just like light, (it would come from the sun or even a lightbulb), It’s very fast and needs something to travel through/bounce off of, so it won’t work in places with no air, gas, or anything,  (like I explain in the next paragraph).

In the article, I learned that sound is like light, it needs something to travel through or bounce off of, this can be things like air, water, glass, or metal. After reading this I wondered if you could hear anything in space because there is no air or gas or anything for sound to travel through. So, can you hear in space? The answer is no, in 1660 Robert Boyle did an experiment testing if we could hear anything if we put a clock in a jar and sucked all the air out. It was proved that we could not hear anything, because there was nothing for the sound to travel through, so in space with no gas or air, you would not be able to hear anything.

Another question I formed while reading the article was, Why does sound at different speeds through different materials? Sound can travel through more solid materials because the molecules are closer together, making it easier to bounce off of solid objects, so when the vibrations bounce off a solid material, the vibrations are stronger and move faster.

I reckon sound is very interesting, and by looking at these questions I feel like I have a better understanding of sound, and I hope you do too.

My Science Report On Planes

Hey bloggers! In literacy lately, we have been doing science experiments. Over the past 2 weeks, we have been learning about flight, and how planes/birds can fly, we learned about the shape of the wings, thrust, drag, and weight. We all got to do an experiment with paper planes to answer our questions, I partnered up with Ngawai and we had a look at what will happen if we add weight to our paper plane. Here is my science report on my experiment. :)

(BTW I haven't finished my conclusion)

Maths-Magic Squares

In maths this term we have been doing magic squares, we have to get three numbers and place them every different way, adding up to the same number, for example, the numbers 5, 7, and 3, those numbers together equal 15.
See how every different way you can think of, it adds up to 15.
The trick is that no matter what 3 numbers they are the smallest and the biggest numbers must have the same difference between them and the middle number, then the middle number always has to go diagonally across cause they'll always add up to the same number as the other numbers together.
Sorry, that might not make much sense cause it's quite hard to explain but hopefully, you understand.

Here is my slide of the magic squares, I was given 3 numbers needed to figure out how to arrange them to always add up to the same numbers.

My sestina

We have been writing poems today, they were fun to make... we had to base it on two cards that someone else wrote, a Journey / Haerenga and a Path / Ara.
Here is what mine turned out like 😊

My Sestina

Journey / Haerenga
Become a great and talented artist

Path / Ara
Patience, hard work, practice, skills and sacrifice

Something you saw.
I saw lots of famous celebrities.

Something you remember.
Every day I practiced so extremely hard.

A person who was with you
Selena Gomez was right next to me.

A wonderfully imagined thing that didn’t actually happen.
I met my most favorite celebrity.

The reason for your journey.
So I can achieve my dream.

Your own six-word sentence.

This took patience and hard work.

What a waste

Dear bloggers, in Literacy we are learning about waste and how much food we waste, did you know that when we waste food we also waste money, and it's more than $165 billion a year?! I also have a diagram of how things work when we eat our meat because when we waste meat we are wasting land, more food and a lot more. I hope you enjoy this slide.                                        Are you doing anything to reduce waste in New Zealand?
What can you do to reduce our waste?

My Essay

In literacy we are learning about waste, this is my essay... while we were learning about wasting food

I learned a lot about how we are wasting other things, like money and water too.

Waste

Every year we are wasting way too much food! Science shows we are eating too much meat.
So why not eat insects?
I know...  it sounds gross, but did you know that in all of your food there are insects anyway.
Everyone eats around 500 grams of insects a year. There might be a little leg of a spider or maybe
a small piece of a cockroach, so what is the big deal with eating insects??
There is a massive variety of insects all over the world, there are around 6 billion different species.

But how do we get around bugs looking/tasting disgusting?
I think a big reason why we have a problem with eating bugs is the way they look, lots of people don't
eat their food because it doesn’t look very appealing to eat, so maybe we could make them look more
appealing and cover them in chocolate and sprinkles or something.

When we waste food we waste a lot of other things that are very important for humans to live with...                                                                                                                                             The first thing we waste by wasting food is money, money is a massive thing that is being wasted, We waste more
than $165 billion a year! All from producing food that is never getting eaten. Next is energy,
we waste energy when we are using all of our machines when doing stuff with food.

The third thing we waste is water, about 25% of all freshwater is wasted.
The last thing is the land. We wasteland because we have to create land for our food, but when we
don’t eat the food, the land is being wasted.

So how can we reduce our waste in the household?
Waste is usually in houses so first let’s get to know the rules of recycling.                                                                                                                                 Don’t be scared by the confusing symbols and sorting rules. Finding out about the recycling system
is actually quite simple once you do a little research. Since recycling rules are different in some places,
find out the rules for your area.
it's better to keep packing
you can reuse in your home whenever you can, recycling is the next best option and it will prevent excess
waste from heading for the landfill.

The next thing we should do is make a meal plan                                                                                                                                In addition to material waste, food waste is a huge problem everywhere. Something to help is to only buy groceries that you know will eat. It sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how much food is wasted and thrown in the trash in New Zealand (In New Zealand we throw away 15.5 million tonnes of waste each year. That is 3,200kg for every kiwi!)The last thing is very important and everyone needs to STOP BUYING PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES!!                                                                                                                                Water bottles and paper coffee cups are huge wastes of material. Buy a sturdy, metal water bottle, and a cute coffee thermos so you can take your drinks wherever you want. You’ll find yourself feeling a lot more hydrated and a lot less wasteful.

The benefits of recycling… If we do recycle our plastics it will mean less risk of having pollution incidents, less waste of things we really need, and it will reduce the amount of food that’s sent to landfills.

So, in conclusion, please try to waste less food, Also Lowering your food waste can be a great way to cut back your bills and footprint!

Numbers 1-10 in Samoan with scratch!

Hi bloggers,

We are learning Samoan every Wednesday and over the last two weeks, we have been learning how to count to ten.  I found this quite easy as it is very similar to counting to 10 in Maori.  Today we used Scratch to code a program that would show people how to count to ten in Samoan.  Check it out!  Can you count to 10 in any other language?

Write in any numeral to watch our clever cat show you what it is in Samoan?

KIDSLINE - Where can we go for help in our community.

For Inquiry, we are learning about helpful places in our community, I chose kidsline because I think kidsline is a great site for kids to go to when feeling down or if things are happening at home. It's a free phone call for kids from 10-21 to call in and they have trained youth workers (young-adults) answering and the kids can tell them what's going on and the person on the phone might give advice or possibly have to do something about it if it's bad.

Okay Portrait

Kia Ora Bloggers, I hope you enjoyed your holidays!

It's that time of year when the teachers make us draw portraits... 😑 I'm not a very good drawer, but maybe because this year it's supposed to be more abstract it's not that bad. Our work this year was inspired by Romero Britto.

This portrait is also some things that I like and some facts about me.

As you can see I have a few things around my face, most of these are all things I love do do (or watch) I have soccer up there, as that is my favourite sport.
Riverdale, and Twilight, which are my favourite movie series and episodes, I also have TikTok , The apple sign, and my phone because I'm obsessed with both of them 😂.

And the last 2 things I have on there is the people that are most important to me and that's my family and friends.

Have you ever drawn a portrait of yourself?
What's your favourite show/sport?
Is there anything you've spotted that we have in common?

See you next time!

What Is Waste?

What is waste?

waste is everything that has no purpose is unusable or is unwanted materials.

waste has a few different meanings to it, they are all common things to find around the house,
this includes, liquid waste, solid rubbish, organic waste, recyclable rubbish and hazardous waste.

some things people might say are "let's not waste time" or they might use a different meaning of waste and say "we can't afford to waste electricity" or  "make sure the waste goes out".

what is waste to you?
